August 2023
With August upon us, we enter into the time of year when parents and children alike begin to countdown the return of school. Most kids grumble about having to get back into the routine of waking up early, doing homework, and relearning classroom decorum while parents are ready for their kids to get an “educational break” from the house.
Yet, it is easy to forget that returning to school for adopted children can be intimidating. There can be awkward questions about “real parents,” probing inquiries about what life was like before, and sometimes there are projects requiring information that is hard to produce.
Teachers can play a huge role in normalizing adoption. I remember vividly in 1st grade how in addition to the normal classroom responsibilities (i.e. pencil sharpener, calendar person, paper collector, mail runner, etc.) she added in the very special role of caring for Bruno the Bear. Throughout the year, each student got to take Bruno home and care for the stuffed animal as an adopted parent and journal the experience along the way. Looking back, it was my first experience with adoption. Luckily, Bruno made it through his 48 hours at my house unscathed (a small miracle).
As God Will Make A Way prepares for an influx of grant applicants, we want to use our time, talents, and treasures to advocate for children both domestically and internationally who need a forever home. Each time we do, we can point to earthly adoption as a microcosm for the even greater adoption in Christ. We both normalize and elevate adoption at the same time.
Let’s not forget that the Bible both normalizes and elevates adoption too. In the Roman world, there was something called adrogation or adult adoption. Some people wonder if Paul, on the island of Cyprus, was adopted into the family of the governor, Sergius Paullus, after sharing the Gospel (check out Acts 13). More importantly, it was through faith in Jesus Christ that each of us are adopted into the family of God.
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.
As children get ready to go back to school, let’s shake off summer by returning with a focus to advocate for children who are often left without a voice.
