Olympic glory
The original Latin motto for the Olympic Games is “Citius, Altius, Fortius,” which translates to “Faster, Higher, Stronger” in English. Throughout these Olympics, millions have enjoyed different parts of the 329 events in 32 sports, encompassing 48 disciplines. Our family has enjoyed the swimming, track and field, and gymnastics competitions. Yet, one of the most powerful stories in a game full of stories is that of U.S. sprinter Kenny Bednarek, who along with his twin brother, Ian, were bounced from foster home to foster home for the first four years of their lives.
Kenny told People Magazine, “I had a lot of issues when I was young just because when I was being shipped from one foster home to another foster home, and as a kid you don’t know what’s going on.”
While Olympic glory towards faster, higher, stronger is admirable, as Kenny reflected on his rollercoaster journey, he realized that adoption changed his life for the better. He pointed out that while the lights and cameras were on him, his adopted mother, Mary, had done something truly impactful. "We worked through everything," he said of his family, with Mary adopting four children in total. "The heart that my mom had, the perseverance to go through adopting four kids by herself and sticking it through... she's inspired me to be a better person every single day. "And she's inspired me to keep living my dream because I wouldn't be here without her."
At God Will Make A Way, we know that adoption is a calling. It is far from easy but catalyzes to "faster, higher, stronger." Our goal at GWMAW is to help Christian families overcome the financial hurdles to adoption so that millions of children can achieve the ultimate goal: knowing Jesus Christ for themselves and experiencing a peace that transcends understanding. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:19-21).
